Rabies Vaccine
Rabavert, Imovax Rabies
Uses
Prevents infection caused by rabies virus. The vaccine can be given before or after you are exposed to the rabies virus.

How To Use
  • APPEARANCE: Injectable. If you have not been exposed to the rabies virus but you are getting the vaccine because you are at risk (if you are a veterinarian, work with animals, or will be going to a country where rabies is common) you should receive 3 doses given on 3 different days within a 1-month period. If you have been exposed to the rabies virus but you have not yet received the vaccine, you will need to get 5 doses given on different days within a 1-month period.
  • A sixth dose may be given 2 months later.
  • You may also receive a shot of immune globulin. If you are at risk, another shot may be given every 6 months to 2 years. It is important that you have the shots when your doctor tells you.

Side Effects
  • Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects: Intense itching, hives Wheezing or trouble breathing Swelling of face, lips, or throat Fever Severe nausea or vomiting Pain, numbness, weakness in hand or feet Pain in joints, like arthritis

Precautions
  • You should not receive rabies vaccine if you have had an allergic reaction to it.

Missed Dose
  • It is very important that you do not miss a dose. If you miss a dose, make another appointment for the next day. Tell your doctor or nurse about any missed doses.

Drug Interactions
  • Make sure your doctor knows before you receive rabies vaccine if you have ever had an allergic reaction to any type of vaccine, or if you have an illness with fever now.

Time Taken: since SEP08 days

Reason: Traveling to multiple 3rd world countries Date: 5 November 2008
Side Effects
I had 3 rabies injections along with a bunch of other travel related jabs in SEP08. At the time of the 2nd rabies injection I reported to my doctor that I had a strange tingling sensation around the top of my arm, which spread down my arm. He advised me there was no connection with this sensation & the vaccination. To this date, my arm gets constant waves of tingling. My doctor said he would send me to see a neuro (?)specialist if the condition persisted through to late NOV08. Trouble is, the intensity of the tingling is stronger & the site of the injection is painful, just as if I had a deep needle in that area . I'm concerned, but this was meant to be an after effect, but it shows no sign of waning.

Additional Thoughts
I would be grateful if someone could advise me whether this is just one of those nasty side effects associated with the rabies injection. I just wish I'd never taken it in the first place & would not recommend unless absolutely necessary in view of the very nasty & ongoing side effects which are intensifying with time.
