Uses
This medication is used for temporary treatment of patent ductus arteriosus, a heart defect in infants, until surgery can be done.
Notes
- Laboratory tests and continuous monitoring will be done to determine the medication effects and to prevent side effects.
Storage
- This medication is freshly prepared each day.
- Properly discard of any unused medication after 24 hours.
How To Use
- HOW TO USE THIS MEDICATION: This medication is infused into a vein using a special pump.
- The patient will be monitored closely by trained health care professionals while receiving this medication.
- Therapy will be evaluated continuously and the risks and benefits considered.
- Discuss them with the doctor.
Side Effects
- Fever, irritability, stiffness, jitteriness, flushing, diarrhea, easy bruising or bleeding may occur.
- If any of these effects continue or become bothersome, inform the doctor.
- The patient will be watched closely since seizures, a rapid or slow heart rate and breathing trouble can occur while using this medication.
- If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions
- This medication is for use in infants only.
- Tell the doctor of any pre-existing bleeding tendencies, breathing disorders or any allergies.
Missed Dose
- This medication is given on a continuous basis.
- It is important that each dose be received as scheduled.
