Physiological Salt Uses This product is used as a mixing solution (diluent) for powdered medications given by injection. It may also be used to flush and clear vein injection tubes (IV lines) or feeding tubes to keep them from becoming blocked. Sodium chloride for injection is available as pre-filled syringes and vials. It is also available with or without a preservative (benzyl alcohol). Notes Do not share this medication with others.Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.g., blood minerals, kidney function) may be performed periodically to monitor your progress or check for side effects. Consult your doctor for more details. Storage Store at room temperature at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) away from light. Brief storage up to 104 degrees F (40 degrees C) is permitted. Keep all medicines away from children and pets. Overdose Symptoms of overdose may include: trouble breathing, swelling. How To Use Before using this solution, learn all directions for preparation and usage. Inspect it visually for particles or discoloration. If either is present, do not use the solution. If you are using this solution to mix a medication, make sure that it is proper to mix this type of solution with the medication.Learn how to store and discard needles and medical supplies safely. Consult your pharmacist or home care nurse for more information. Side Effects Side effects from sodium chloride solution are rare and more likely to be caused by how the solution is given or the medication it is mixed with.Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: fever, redness/pain at the injection site, sore/red/swollen vein leading from the injection site, swelling of the area near the injection site, swollen feet/ankles/legs/body, trouble breathing, muscle cramps/weakness.If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Precautions These products are usually used in small amounts and usually do not have any precautions. However, if larger amounts are used or if the mixed medication is further diluted before being given, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: severe kidney problems, a certain heart problem (chronic heart failure), water/sodium retention problems, other conditions that cause sodium/water retention (e.g., pre-eclampsia, nephritic syndrome), severe liver problems with a swollen abdomen (cirrhosis with ascites).A preservative (benzyl alcohol) that might be found in this product can infrequently cause serious (sometimes fatal) problems if given in large amounts (more than 100 milligrams per kilogram daily) to an infant during the first months of life. The risk is also greater with low-birth-weight infants. Symptoms include sudden gasping, low blood pressure, or very slow heartbeat. If you notice any of these symptoms in your newborn, report them to the doctor immediately. If possible, a preservative-free product should be used when treating newborns.Kidney function decreases as you grow older. This solution is removed by the kidneys. Therefore, elderly people may be at increased risk for fluid buildup around the heart and in the lungs while receiving large amounts of this solution.This solution is considered safe to use during pregnancy.This solution is considered safe to use during breast-feeding. Missed Dose If you are using this medication to flush a line and miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If the line is blocked, contact your doctor immediately. Drug Interactions Your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for them. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with your doctor or pharmacist first.Drug interactions are not expected with the small amounts of sodium chloride solution used to mix most medications. However, if larger amounts are used or if the mixed medication is further diluted before being given, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: "water pills" (diuretics such as furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide), medications that increase salt and water retention (e.g., corticotropin, fludrocortisones, corticosteroids such as prednisone).
