Brings on or strengthens labor contractions during childbirth. Also used to control bleeding after childbirth, or to induce an abortion.
How To Use
- APPEARANCE: Injectable.
Your doctor will prescribe your exact dose and tell you how often it should be given.
- This medicine is given through a needle placed in one of your veins.
A nurse or other trained health professional will give you this medicine.
It is important not to drink too much water or other clear liquids while you are receiving this medicine.
Side Effects
- Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:
Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in face or hands, swelling or tingling in the mouth or throat, tightness in chest, trouble breathing
Fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat
Extreme thirst, confusion, agitation, weakness, muscle twitching
Lightheadedness or fainting
Seizure (convulsions)
Sudden, severe, and ongoing headache
Unusual bleeding or bruising
Precautions
- You should not receive this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to oxytocin, or if you have ever had a ruptured uterus or a previous C-section that left scar tissue in your uterus.
Drug Interactions
- Make sure your doctor knows about all other medicines you are using.
This medicine is generally not used in women who are having multiple births (twins, triplets, etc).
