Omeprazole Dr Capsule - Oral Prilosec Uses Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat various acid-related stomach and/or throat (esophagus) problems (e.g., acid reflux or GERD, ulcers, erosive esophagitis, or Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome). It works by blocking acid production in the stomach. Omeprazole may be used in combination with antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin, clarithromycin) to treat certain types of ulcers. Storage Store at room temperature between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medicines away from children and pets. Overdose If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include: confusion, unusual sweating, blurred vision, unusually fast heartbeat. Photos Prilosec (omeprazole) 20 mg Prilosec (omeprazole) 10 mg OMEPRAZOLE 10 MG CAPSULE DR How To Use Take Omeprazole by mouth, usually once daily, 15 to 30 minutes before a meal; or as directed by your doctor. The dosage and length of treatment is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Do not crush, break or chew the medication. Swallow the medication whole. If you have difficulty swallowing Omeprazole whole, the capsule may be opened and the contents sprinkled onto cool applesauce and taken as directed. Do not chew the food/medication mixture or prepare a supply in advance; this may destroy Omeprazole and/or increase side effects. Drink a glass of cool water after each dose to ensure complete swallowing of the medication. Potent acid-reducing medicines such as omeprazole can decrease the effectiveness of sucralfate, as well as other drugs such as the antifungals ketoconazole and itraconazole. If instructed to take any of these drugs while taking omeprazole, consult your doctor or pharmacist regarding the proper timing of each dose. For example, if you are instructed to take sucralfate in addition to omeprazole, it is best to take the omeprazole at least 30 minutes before your sucralfate. Antacids may be taken along with Omeprazole, if needed. Use Omeprazole regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. Remember to use it at the same time each day. Continue to take Omeprazole for the prescribed length of treatment even if you are feeling better. Side Effects Constipation, cough, dizziness or back pain may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. An allergic reaction to Omeprazole is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Precautions Before using Omeprazole, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: heartburn combined with lightheadedness or sweating or dizziness, chest pain or shoulder/jaw pain especially with shortness of breath, pain spreading to arms or neck or shoulders, unexplained weight loss, liver problems, other stomach problems (e.g., tumors), any allergies (including drug allergies). Omeprazole may make you dizzy; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages. Omeprazole should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known whether Omeprazole passes into breast milk. Breast-feeding while using Omeprazole is not recommended. Missed Dose If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up. Drug Interactions Before using Omeprazole, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription products you may use, especially of: ampicillin, azole antifungals (e.g., ketoconazole, itraconazole), benzodiazepines (e.g., diazepam), blood thinners (e.g., warfarin), cilostazol, cyclosporine, digoxin, disulfiram, iron supplements, phenytoin, sucralfate, voriconazole.
