Ocupress Opht Uses Carteolol is used alone or with other medications to treat high pressure inside the eye (e.g., due to open-angle glaucoma). Lowering high pressure in the eye can help prevent eye damage and vision loss. Carteolol is a beta blocker. It is thought to work by reducing the amount of fluid made in the eye. Notes Do not share this medication with others.Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.g., eye exams) should be performed periodically to monitor your progress or check for side effects. Consult your doctor for more details. Storage Store at room temperature between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Keep bottle tightly closed. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medicines away from children and pets. Overdose If accidentally swallowed, you may experience symptoms such as: slow/irregular heart beat, dizziness, fainting, difficulty breathing. How To Use Use this medication in the affected eye(s), usually 1 drop twice daily or as directed by your doctor. Exactly follow your doctor's directions on how often to take this drug. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy.This product contains a preservative (benzalkonium chloride) which can be absorbed by contact lenses. Therefore, contact lenses should be removed before using this medication. They may be re-inserted 15 minutes after using carteolol.Before using, check this product visually for brown discoloration, cloudiness, or particles. If any of these is present, do not use the eye drops.To apply eye drops, wash your hands first. To avoid contamination, do not touch the dropper tip or let it touch your eye or any other surface. Shake the bottle well before use.Tilt your head back, look upward, and gently pull down the lower eyelid to make a pouch. Hold the dropper directly over the eye and place one drop in the pouch. Look downward and gently close your eyes for 1-2 minutes. Place one finger at the corner of the eye near the nose and apply gentle pressure to prevent the medication from draining out. Try not to blink and do not rub the eye. This will prevent the medication from draining away from the eye. Repeat these steps for your other eye if directed by your doctor.Do not rinse the dropper. Replace the dropper cap after each use.If you are using another kind of eye medication (e.g., drops or ointments), wait at least 10 minutes before applying other medications. Use the eye drops before eye ointments to allow the eye drops to enter the eye.Use this medication regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, use it at the same times each day. It is important to continue taking this medication even if you feel well. Most people with high pressure in the eye do not feel sick. Side Effects This medication may temporarily burn or sting your eyes for a minute or two when applied. Temporary eye redness/watering, blurred vision, or headache may also occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: vision changes, eye pain/sensitivity, sensitivity to light, persistent eye redness/itching/discharge, mental/mood changes (e.g., depression), slow/irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting, cold hands/feet, chest pain, tingling of the hands/feet, persistent cough, decreased sexual ability.Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: weakness on one side of the body, slurred speech, seizures, confusion.This drug may infrequently cause serious heart problems (e.g, heart failure). If you notice any of the following unlikely but very serious side effects, seek immediate medical attention: swelling of the ankles/feet, unusual tiredness, trouble breathing.A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Precautions Before taking carteolol, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to other beta blockers (e.g., timolol); or to preservatives (e.g., benzalkonium chloride); or if you have any other allergies.This medication should not be used if you have certain medical conditions. Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have: certain types of heart rhythm problems (e.g., sinus bradycardia, second- or third-degree atrioventricular block), certain serious heart conditions (cardiogenic shock, severe heart failure), severe breathing problems (asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-COPD).Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: narrow-angle glaucoma, heart failure (treated, stable type), breathing problems (e.g., wheezing/cough with exercise), diabetes, overactive thyroid (e.g., hyperthyroidism), blood circulation problems (e.g., Raynaud's disease, peripheral vascular disease), low blood flow to the brain (cerebral insufficiency), mental/mood disorders (e.g., depression), certain nerve/muscle problems (e.g., myasthenia gravis), recent nerve surgery (e.g., sympathectomy), history of severe allergic reactions.Use caution engaging in activities requiring clear vision such as driving or using machinery because your vision may be temporarily blurred or unstable after applying this drug. Limit alcoholic beverages.Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking this medication.If you have diabetes, this product may mask the fast/pounding heartbeat you would usually feel when your blood sugar level falls too low (hypoglycemia). Other symptoms of a low blood sugar level, such as dizziness/sweating, are unaffected by this drug. This product also may make it harder to control your blood sugar levels. Check your blood sugar regularly as directed by your doctor. Tell your doctor immediately if you have symptoms of high blood sugar such as increased thirst/urination. Your anti-diabetic medication or diet may need to be adjusted.Caution is advised when using this drug in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to its effects, especially dizziness and lightheadedness.If you develop an eye infection, have an eye injury, or have eye surgery, you may be more likely to get an eye infection from a used bottle of this medication. Check with your doctor about whether you should continue to use the same dropper bottle or use a fresh one.This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.It is not known if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. Missed Dose If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up. Drug Interactions Your healthcare professionals (e.g., doctor or pharmacist) may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for it. Do not start, stop or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first.Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: alpha blockers (e.g., prazosin), beta blockers taken by mouth (e.g., atenolol, metoprolol), bronchodilators (e.g., albuterol), drugs for diabetes (e.g., glyburide, insulin), clonidine, digoxin, epinephrine, methyldopa, reserpine, theophylline.
