Na Ferric Gluc Cplx in Sucrose Uses This medication is used to treat or prevent low blood levels of iron in hemodialysis patients who are also receiving medication to increase red blood cells (erythropoietin). Iron is a very important mineral used in red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body. Notes Do not share this medication with others.Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.g., complete blood count, ferritin levels) may be performed to monitor your progress or check for side effects. Storage Store the unmixed medication at room temperature 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Brief storage between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) is permitted. Do not freeze. Use the injection immediately after mixing. Keep all medicines away from children and pets. Overdose Symptoms of overdose may include: severe stomach pain, vomiting, pale/bluish skin (especially the lips/fingers/toes), rapid breathing. How To Use Before the prescribed dose is given, a smaller test dose of this drug may be given to check for possible side effects or allergic reactions. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more information.This medication is given by injection slowly into a vein or into your dialysis line. Follow the manufacturer's directions for injection since giving this medication too quickly may increase the risk of side effects (e.g., low blood pressure). The dosage and length of treatment is based on your age, medical condition, and response to therapy. Consult your pharmacist for directions on how to mix the solution.Before using this medication, check it visually for particles or discoloration. If either is present, do not use the liquid. Side Effects Nausea, flushing, headache, diarrhea, cramps, or discomfort at the injection site may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, contact your doctor or pharmacist promptly.Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: dizziness/lightheadedness, muscle pain (especially in the lower back/buttocks/legs), tingling of hands/feet, unusual weakness, vomiting.A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Precautions Before taking this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies.Before taking this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: low blood pressure, certain metabolic disorders (e.g., hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis), previous reaction to iron dextran injection.This medication is not recommended for use in newborns.Tell your doctor if you are pregnant before using this medication.It is not known if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. Missed Dose Not applicable.
