Motrin
Uses
This medication is given to children to reduce a fever and/or relieve minor aches, pain and swelling.
Notes
- This medication should be used for no longer than 3 days for a fever or 10 days for pain unless directed to do so by your doctor.
- If symptoms continue after this time or become worse, consult your health care professional.
Storage
- Store at room temperature (between 59 and 86 degrees F; 15 to 30 degrees C) away from heat and light.
- Do not store in the bathroom.

How To Use
- Take this medication by mouth with food or immediately after a meal as directed.
- Shake well before measuring each dose.
- Drops may be mixed with milk, juice or formula.
- Take this medication exactly as prescribed.
- Do not increase the dose, take this more often or take this for longer than prescribed.
Side Effects
- Stomach upset, nausea or diarrhea may occur initially.
- If any of these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor.
- Notify your doctor if you develop dark or bloody stools, dark urine, vomiting, stomach pain, chest pain, ringing in the ears, breathing trouble, unusual bruising or bleeding, swelling of the feet or ankles, weight gain, vision changes, itching or skin rash while taking this medication.
- Infrequently, this medication may increase the skin's sensitivity to sunlight.
- If this happens to you, avoid prolonged sun exposure, wear protective clothing and use a sunscreen.
- Avoid sunlamps.
- If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions
- Tell your doctor your medical history especially of any liver or kidney disease, blood disorders, ulcers, heart disease, alcohol use, high blood pressure, eye disease or allergies, especially drug allergies.
- Use caution when performing tasks requiring alertness.
- Limit alcohol intake as it may intensify the drowsiness effect of this medication.
- This medicine may cause stomach bleeding.
- Daily use of alcohol, especially when combined with this medicine, may increase your risk for stomach bleeding.
- Check with your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
- Do not take aspirin without consulting your doctor.
- Check the ingredients of any nonprescription medication you may be taking since many cough-and-cold formulas contain aspirin.
- Caution is advised when this drug is used in the elderly.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant before using this drug.
- Use of this drug in the last 6 months of pregnancy is not recommended.
- This drug is excreted into breast milk.
- Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Missed Dose
- If you miss a dose take it as soon as remembered; do not take it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
- Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.
Drug Interactions
- Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take including diuretics (water pills), lithium.
- beta-blockers, warfarin, triamterene/amiloride, methotrexate, aspirin, other aspirin-like drugs (NSAID such as naproxen) or seizure medication.
- Check labels on all medicines, including over-the-counter drugs, and consult your pharmacist if you are uncertain they contain aspirin or other NSAID.
- Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
