How To Use
  • Take with food or milk twice daily or as directed by your doctor.
  • Swallow whole for maximum effect.
  • Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level.
  • Do this by taking the medication at evenly spaced intervals throughout the day and night.
  • Continue to take this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a few days.
  • Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow resulting in a relapse of the infection.

Side Effects
  • May cause stomach upset, diarrhea, loss of appetite, nausea, dizziness and headache during the first few days as your body adjusts to the medication.
  • If these symptoms persist or become severe, inform your doctor.
  • May cause urine to turn yellow-brown in color.
  • This is not a cause for concern and will disappear when the drug is stopped.
  • Inform your doctor if you develop unusual weakness, tingling of the hands or feet, chills, muscle aches, cough or yellowing of the eyes/skin.
  • In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek medical attention immediately.
  • Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, fever or trouble breathing.
  • If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions
  • Before using this drug, tell your doctor your medical history including allergies (drug allergies), kidney, liver or lung diseases; nerve disorders (peripheral neuropathy), anemia, diabetes or eye problems (optic neuritis).
  • Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in a secondary infection (e.g., oral, bladder or vaginal yeast infection).
  • Avoid use of this drug in infants less than 1 month old.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant before using this drug.
  • Avoid use at term (38 to 42 weeks of pregnancy) and during labor and delivery.
  • This drug is excreted into breast milk and a decision must be made to either discontinue the use of this drug or to stop breast-feeding.
  • Consult your doctor.

Missed Dose
  • Take the missed dose as soon as remembered unless it is almost time for the next dose.
  • If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
  • Do not double the dose to catch up.

Drug Interactions
  • Inform your doctor about all the medicines you use (both prescription and nonprescription) especially of probenecid, sulfinpyrazone, quinolone antibiotics (e.g., ciprofloxacin) and magnesium trisilicate-containing antacids.

Side Effects
After taking for 1 day (2 pills), the next morning I could not get out of bed because of extreme weakness, coughing similar to bronchitis (lungs were clear the day before), chills & fever, unable to eat or any normal functions. Primary care physician instructed me to go to ER where they said I could not possibly be having allergic reactions (because I did not have hives). My lower back pains were worse than before I went to the primary care physician. I was treated with Cipro in IVs and given prescription for Cipro. I will never take Macrobid again!

Additional Thoughts
I experienced the same symptoms 4 months previously, not suspecting adverse reactions to Macrobid at the time (only took 2 pills then also). Ended up in the ER, and given prescription for Avelox.

A few hours after I took the pill, my stomach would bloat. It was embarrassing. My stomach hurt so bad that I could do nothing but moan on the couch and hope that my husband would come early to watch the kids. I became extremely irritable, as well.

Additional Thoughts
I don't know of another solution...just prepare yourself for the worst.

Wow! I'm glad I found this site. I've been up all night sick after taking only one pill of Nitrofurantoin (Macrobid) I was so scared that I thought I was going to die in the bathroom. I decided to jump online and read about it and I wish I would have done this before taking the 1 100mg pill. I feel sorry for the people that took it longer. I'm going to try the all-natural route D-Mannose powder,Vit C crystals and Acidopholis.

Additional Thoughts
Stop taking this immediately!
