Uses
Loracarbef is a cephalosporin-like antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections, such as respiratory tract infections, middle ear infections, skin infections, urinary tract infections, and tonsillitis.
Notes
- This medication has been prescribed for your current condition only.
- Do not use it later for another infection or give it to someone else.
- A different medication may be necessary.
Storage
- Store capsules and liquid suspension at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C) away from moisture and sunlight.
- Do not store in the bathroom.
- Check the expiration date on the liquid suspension and discard any unused medication after that date.

How To Use
- This medication should be taken on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating.
- The liquid suspension form of this medication must be shaken well before using.
- It does not have to be refrigerated.
- Discard any unused portion after 14 days because the drug loses potency.
Side Effects
- This medication may cause stomach upset, diarrhea, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and headache.
- If they continue or become severe, inform your doctor.
- Other side effects reported with this medication include nervousness, insomnia and dizziness.
- Inform your doctor if any of these effects occur.
- Unlikely to occur but report a fever, easy bleeding or bruising or a change in the amount of urine.
- Notify your doctor immediately if an allergic reaction occurs while taking this medication.
- Symptoms include difficulty breathing, skin rash, hives, itching.
- If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions
- Tell your doctor of any allergies you have especially to penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics, other antibiotics or other medications.
- Tell your doctor if you have a history of kidney disease, colitis or stomach problems.
- Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in a secondary infection (e.g., oral, bladder or vaginal yeast infection).
- This drug should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy.
- Since small amounts of this medication are found in breast milk, consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Missed Dose
- If you should miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered unless it is almost time for the next dose.
- If it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
- Do not "double-up" the dose.
Drug Interactions
- Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take including probenecid (for gout), anticoagulants (blood thinners) or other antibiotics.
- Diabetics should be aware this medication may cause false positive urine glucose tests.
- Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about alternative way to monitor your sugar levels.
- Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
