This medication is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It may also be used before certain urological procedures to prevent bladder/kidney infections. Lomefloxacin belongs to a class of drugs known as quinolone antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. Uses
This medication is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It may also be used before certain urological procedures to prevent bladder/kidney infections. Lomefloxacin belongs to a class of drugs known as quinolone antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. - Do not use it later for another infection unless told to do so by your doctor.

Storage
- Store at room temperature between 59-77 degrees F (15-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
- Do not store in the bathroom.
- Keep all medicines away from children and pets.
How To Use
- Take this medication by mouth, with or without food, usually once a day or as directed by your doctor.
- Take lomefloxacin in the evening to help reduce the risk of a sun-sensitivity reaction.
- Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication unless your doctor tells you otherwise.The dosage and duration of therapy is based on your medical condition and response to therapy.Take this medication at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after taking any products containing magnesium or aluminum.
- Some examples include quinapril, didanosine (chewable/buffered tablets, pediatric powder for oral solution), vitamins/minerals, and antacids.
- Follow the same instructions if you also take bismuth subsalicylate, sucralfate, iron, and zinc.
- These products bind with lomefloxacin and may prevent its full absorption.Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level.
- Therefore, take this drug at evenly spaced intervals (at the same time every day).If you are taking this medication to treat an infection, continue to take it until the full-prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear after a few days.
- Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of the infection.
- Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.If you are taking this medication for the prevention of certain bacterial infections, take it exactly as directed by your doctor.
Side Effects
- Headache, nausea, dizziness, and diarrhea may occur.
- If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.
- Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: numbness/tingling/weakness of arms/legs, uncontrolled movements (e.g., tremor, twitching), vision changes.Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: easy bruising/bleeding, fast/slow/irregular heartbeats, fainting, mental/mood changes (including depression, rare thoughts of suicide), new signs of infection (e.g., fever, persistent sore throat), seizures, persistent nausea/vomiting, yellowing of eyes or skin, change in the amount of urine.Lomefloxacin may cause moderate to severe sun-sensitivity reactions.
- These reactions may occur up to several weeks after you finish therapy.
- Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors.
- Avoid exposure to direct/indirect sunlight and sunlamps/tanning booths while taking this medication and for several days after finishing it.
- Seek immediate medical attention if you notice burning, redness, or blistering of the skin while on this medication.
- If you have a sun-sensitivity reaction, avoid re-exposure to sunlight and sunlamps/tanning booths until you have completely recovered from the reaction.
- Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details.This medication may rarely cause tendon damage (e.g., tendon rupture).
- Stop exercising, rest, and seek immediate medical attention if you develop joint/muscle/tendon pain or swelling.This medication may rarely cause a severe intestinal condition (pseudomembranous colitis) due to resistant bacteria.
- This condition may occur weeks after treatment has stopped.
- Do not use anti-diarrhea products or narcotic pain medications if you have the following symptoms because these products may make them worse.
- Tell your doctor immediately if you develop: persistent diarrhea, abdominal or stomach pain/cramping, blood/mucus in your stool.Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in oral thrush or a new yeast infection (e.g., oral or vaginal fungal infection).
- Contact your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge or other new symptoms.A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs.
- Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions
- Before taking lomefloxacin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you are allergic to any other quinolone antibiotic such as ciprofloxacin, gatifloxacin, levofloxacin, or moxifloxacin; or if you have any other allergies.This medication should not be used if you have certain medical conditions.
- Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have: certain heart rhythm disorders (QTc prolongation), untreated low potassium levels.Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: brain disorders (e.g., cerebral atherosclerosis, tumors, increased intracranial pressure), certain heart conditions (e.g., recent myocardial infarction, bradycardia), kidney disease, liver disease, muscle/joint/tendon problems (e.g., tendonitis), seizures, family history of certain heart rhythm disorders (QTc prolongation).This drug may make you dizzy, drowsy, or cause blurred vision; use caution while engaging in activities requiring alertness and clear vision, such as driving or using machinery.
- Limit alcoholic beverages.Caution is advised when using this medication in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to its effects (e.g., tendon problems), especially if they are also taking corticosteroids (e.g., prednisone, hydrocortisone).Caution is advised when using this drug in children because they may be more sensitive to its possible side effects (e.g., joint/tendon problems).
- Discuss the risks and benefits with the doctor.This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy.
- Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.Based on information from related drugs, this medication may pass into breast milk.
- Therefore, breast-feeding while using this medication is not recommended.
- Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Missed Dose
- If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember.
- If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
- Do not double the dose to catch up.
Drug Interactions

- Do not start, stop or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first.This drug should not be used with the following medications because very serious interactions may occur: certain antiarrhythmics (e.g., quinidine, procainamide, amiodarone, dofetilide, sotalol).If you are currently using any of these medications listed above, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting this medication.Other drugs besides this medication and those listed above which may affect the heart rhythm (QTc prolongation in the EKG) include cisapride, erythromycin, and antipsychotics ( e.g., pimozide) among others.
- QTc prolongation can infrequently result in serious, rarely fatal, irregular heartbeats.
- Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details, and for instructions on how you may minimize the risk of this effect.Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: corticosteroids (e.g., prednisone, hydrocortisone), cyclosporine, NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen), probenecid, live bacterial vaccines, drugs that lower potassium levels (e.g., diuretics such as furosemide), warfarin.Also report to your doctor the use of drugs which might increase seizure risk (decrease seizure threshold) when combined with this medication, such as phenothiazines (e.g., thioridazine), tricyclic antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline), isoniazid (INH), and theophylline, among others.
