Kineret SubQ Uses This medication is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis that has not improved with other drugs (disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs-DMARDs). Anakinra slows the worsening of rheumatoid arthritis by preventing a certain protein (interleukin-1) from causing more damage. This effect may reduce pain, swelling, and tenderness in your joints, allowing you to do your normal activities. Notes Do not share this medication with others.Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.g., white blood cell count) should be performed periodically to monitor your progress or check for side effects. Consult your doctor for more details. Storage Store in the refrigerator between 36-46 degrees F (2-8 degrees C) away from light. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines away from children and pets. How To Use Read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist before you start using anakinra and each time you get a refill. Learn how to prepare and inject this medication. If you have any questions, consult your doctor or pharmacist.This medication is injected under the skin, usually once daily or as directed by your doctor.Before using, check the single-use pre-filled glass syringe for any particles or color changes. Use the medication only if it is clear and colorless/white. Do not shake the syringe. Let the syringe warm to room temperature for 60 to 90 minutes before injecting the medicine.Before injecting each dose, clean the injection site with rubbing alcohol. It is important to change the location of the injection site daily to avoid problem areas under the skin. Learn how to use and discard needles and medical supplies safely. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for details.Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, use it at the same time each day.Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens after 4 weeks. Side Effects Injection site reactions (e.g., redness, swelling, bruising, itching, stinging), headache, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain may occur. In most patients, injection site reactions end after 2 to 4 weeks of treatment. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.Serious infections (e.g., skin infections, pneumonia, bone/joint infections, sinusitis) may occur. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these signs of infection occur: spreading redness/swelling/tenderness of the skin, fever, chills, cough with mucus, bone pain/soreness, persistent sore throat, pain over cheeks or around eyes.Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: swollen glands (lymph nodes), night sweats, unusual weight loss, persistent itching, lump in breast, nipple discharge.A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Precautions Before taking anakinra, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to proteins made from a certain bacteria (E. coli); or to latex; or if you have any other allergies.This medication should not be used if you have certain medical conditions. Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have: current/ongoing infection.Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: kidney disease, asthma, immune system problems, cancer.Do not have immunizations/vaccinations without the consent of your doctor, and avoid contact with people who have recently received oral polio vaccine or flu vaccine inhaled through the nose.Kidney function declines as you grow older. This medication is removed by the kidneys. Therefore, elderly people may be at greater risk for side effects (e.g., infections) while using this drug.During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. Missed Dose If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up. Drug Interactions Your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for them. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with your doctor or pharmacist first.This drug should not be used with the following medications because very serious interactions may occur: live vaccines (e.g., polio vaccine taken by mouth, measles/mumps/rubella, flu vaccine inhaled through the nose), certain other rheumatoid arthritis drugs (e.g., abatacept, tumor-necrosis-factor-blocking DMARDs, including adalimumab, etanercept, infliximab).If you have recently received any of these medications listed above, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting anakinra.Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use.
