Ipol Uses This medication is a vaccine. It causes your immune system to protect you from polio virus. Notes Do not share this medication with others. Storage This vaccine is intended for immediate use, not storage, by the person being vaccinated. For bulk storage, the vaccine is stable if refrigerated between 35 and 46 degrees F (2-8 degrees C). Do not freeze. How To Use HOW TO USE THIS MEDICATION: This vaccine (IPV) is given by injection under the skin in a series of separate doses. Other doses may be given as the oral polio vaccine (OPV). Before use, the vaccine should be checked for particles or discoloration. It is critical to follow your physician's instructions exactly and complete the entire treatment series. All doses of vaccine must be used before protection against polio can occur. Discuss fully the benefits and risks of the two types of polio vaccine with your doctor and which treatment series would be best for you or your child. Side Effects This vaccine is generally well tolerated. Temporary and infrequent redness, swelling or pain at the injection site has occurred. If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Precautions Before using this drug, tell your doctor your medical history, including any allergies (especially drug allergies) or recent fever/illness. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. This vaccine may be excreted into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. Missed Dose If you miss a dose, consult your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Drug Interactions Tell your doctor of all nonprescription or prescription medication you may use, especially immune-suppressing drugs (e.g., any corticosteroids such as prednisone, anticancer treatment such as alkylating agents, antimetabolites or radiation therapy). In the clinic or pharmacy, do not mix this vaccine with diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (DTP) or DTaP in the same syringe as the strength of the polio vaccine may be decreased if prepared in this manner. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
