This medication is used to treat heart and blood flow problems in shock (reduction of blood flow to all parts of the body). Shock may be caused by a heart attack, kidney failure, severe injury, or heart failure. This medication acts quickly to cause the heart to pump blood more effectively and therefore increase the blood flow from the heart, raise a dropping blood pressure, and increase urine flow.

Uses
This medication is used to treat heart and blood flow problems in shock (reduction of blood flow to all parts of the body). Shock may be caused by a heart attack, kidney failure, severe injury, or heart failure. This medication acts quickly to cause the heart to pump blood more effectively and therefore increase the blood flow from the heart, raise a dropping blood pressure, and increase urine flow.
Notes
- Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.g., urine flow, blood pressure, heart rate/rhythm) should be performed periodically to monitor your progress or check for side effects.

Storage
- Store at room temperature between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
- Keep all medicines away from children and pets.
Overdose
- Symptoms of overdose may include: severe headache.
How To Use
- This medication is given by injection into a large vein by a health care professional.
- Learn all preparation and usage instructions for this product.
- Follow all instructions for proper mixing with the correct IV fluids.
- Before using this product, check it visually for particles or discoloration.
- If either is present, do not use the liquid.
- If you have questions about the use of this medication, consult the doctor or pharmacist.Dosage is based on your medical condition, weight, and response to treatment.This medication should not be stopped suddenly without consulting the doctor.
- Your condition may become worse when the drug is suddenly stopped.
- Your dose may need to be gradually decreased.Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.
Side Effects
- Headache, nausea, or vomiting may occur.
- If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.
- Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: dizziness, fast/slow/irregular heartbeat, swelling/pain/change in skin color at injection site, pain/coldness/change in skin color of arms/legs, chest pain, shortness of breath, change in the amount of urine.A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare.
- However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions
- Before using dopamine, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to sulfites; or if you have any other allergies.This medication should not be used if you have certain medical conditions.
- Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have: pheochromocytoma, fast heartbeat, certain irregular heart rhythm (ventricular fibrillation).Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: high carbon dioxide level (hypercapnia), lack of oxygen (hypoxia), increased acidity in the blood (acidosis), heart/blood vessel disease (e.g., Raynaud's disease, atherosclerosis, irregular heartbeat, coronary artery disease), high blood pressure.Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist that you are using this medication.During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed.
- Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.It is not known whether this medication passes into breast milk.
- Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Missed Dose
Drug Interactions
- Your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for them.
- Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with your doctor or pharmacist first.Avoid taking MAO inhibitors (furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine) within 3 weeks before and during treatment with this medication.
- In some cases a serious (possibly fatal) drug interaction may occur.If you are currently using any of these medications listed above, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting dopamine.Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: alpha blockers (e.g., prazosin, terazosin), beta blockers (e.g., metoprolol, propranolol), butyrophenones (e.g., haloperidol), certain inhaled anesthetics (e.g., halothane, isoflurane), entacapone, ergot alkaloids (e.g., ergotamine), guanethidine, methyldopa, oxytocic drugs (e.g., oxytocin), phenothiazines (e.g., chlorpromazine, prochlorperazine), phenytoin, tricyclic antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline, doxepin).Do not mix dopamine in alkaline solutions such as sodium bicarbonate or with other drugs in the same solution.
