Side Effects
Had 11 of 15 listed side effects first time I took Actonel

Additional Thoughts
My Dr. prescribed Actonel after a bone scan showed slight density loss in my spine. After suffering side effects and doing some research I immediately discontinued use and will NOT go back to any of the medications for bone loss. I started taking Citracal w/Vit D & Vitamin K2 supplements. My 86 year old mother started on Fosamax. Up until that time she had impecable posture, with no problems. Within 6 mo. she virturally became a cripple, with joint swelling, gastric problems, and extreem pain in her back. After discontinuing the Fosamax her symptoms decreased and continue to improve. The stuff is poison. It does not build new bone, it retains old, dead, brittle bone so, yes, the bone density test shows improved bone mass. It's like replacing a steel rod with one made of porcelin.

Side Effects
Stiffness, joint pain especially painful in hips and when walking, waking up at night by severe pain in joints and bones, acid reflux symptoms, difficulty getting up and moving after sitting. My doctor insisted I keep taking it.

Additional Thoughts
I went off it on my own after hearing it loses effectiveness after 5 years. I almost immediately experienced total relief from all the sypmtoms. I can move freely without pain and stiffness. I never knew all my pain was caused by this drug. I also have slept without being awakened with pain.

Side Effects
joint and/or muscle pain; shoulder tendonitis and/or bursitis

Additional Thoughts
Exercising the shoulder within 48 hours of Fosamax caused the shoulder to freeze within hours of exercise. Frozen for 4 days before I saw my doctor; he doesn't think it's Fosamax related, even though I mentioned the same shoulder experienced noticable muscle weakness twice in the last 2 months--both times within 24 hours of Fosamax. Muscle weakness lasted about 5 days each time.

Side Effects
Within 8 hours of taking Fosamax I began to feel 'strange'. 4 hours after that I had waves of nausea, severe stomach cramps, gas and the sensation I would have diarrhea. I felt as though I was on fire and at the same time I felt as though I was freezing. I had difficulty sleeping. When I did sleep I had disturbing dreams that every cell in my body was mutating. The following morning I had some joint aches and pains. It was difficult to stand up straight. And I felt groggy like I had jet lag. I won't take it again.
