How To Use
  • HOW TO USE THIS MEDICATION: Make sure you understand how to use the inhaler properly.
  • Shake the canister well before using.
  • When using the inhaler for the first time, test the unit by spraying at least once into the air.
  • A fine mist indicates that the inhaler is properly working.
  • If the canister has a strap attached to the cap, leave this in place.
  • It is recommended you use a spacer/holding chamber.
  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist about this.
  • If using without a spacing device, place the canister near your mouth and exhale.
  • Depress the canister as you inhale deeply.
  • Hold your breath for a few seconds to allow the drug to be absorbed.
  • Shake the inhaler again before using.
  • If two inhalations are prescribed, wait at least one minute between inhalations.
  • If using other inhalers, wait several minutes between the use of the inhalers and use this one (the corticosteroid) last.
  • Gargle and rinse your mouth after using to help prevent dryness, relieve throat irritation and to prevent oral yeast infections.
  • Do not swallow the rinse solution.
  • Use this medication exactly as prescribed.
  • Do not use it more frequently without your doctor's approval.

Side Effects
  • May cause a cough, nasal congestion/pain, headache, unpleasant taste or hoarseness.
  • If these continue or are bothersome, notify your doctor.
  • Notify your doctor if you experience a white-colored tongue or mouth or prolonged throat irritation while using this medication.
  • Very unlikely but report breathing trouble, fever, rash, swelling of the hands/feet or vision changes.
  • Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following signs of low steroid levels: unusual weakness, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, fainting or dizziness.
  • If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions
  • Before using this drug, tell your doctor your entire medical history, any allergies, illnesses/infections, recent exposure to contagious diseases (e.g., chickenpox), glaucoma or cataracts.
  • If within the past 12 months you have switched from an oral corticosteroid (e.g., prednisone) to this inhaler, or if you had been using this product in higher-than-usual doses and suddenly stopped using it, your body may not produce enough natural steroids.
  • You may need to start taking additional corticosteroids, especially if your body is stressed due to major infection, surgery or injury.
  • Consult your doctor.
  • If you cough up mucus that has thickened or changed color from clear white to yellow, green or gray, contact your doctor.
  • These changes may be signs of infection.
  • If you use a medicine to open your airways as directed during an asthma attack and your breathing does not improve, contact your doctor.
  • Keep regular eye appointments to check for eye problems (rare) that may occur.
  • This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy.
  • Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
  • It is not known whether fluticasone is excreted into human milk.
  • Because other corticosteroids are excreted, discuss the risks of breast-feeding with your doctor.
  • Children and teenagers should be monitored for proper growth patterns while using any corticosteroid medicine.

Missed Dose
  • Use the missed dose as soon as remembered.
  • Use the remaining doses for that day at evenly spaced intervals.

Drug Interactions
  • Tell your doctor of all nonprescription and prescription medication you may take, especially oral corticosteroids (e.g., dexamethasone, hydrocortisone, prednisone) and of all other medications used for asthma.
  • Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

Side Effects
Side Effects? They should be called mind & body altering effects! I wouldn't call living with a little devil a "side effect"! :) Flovent is horrible! We have "tested" this medicine several times by taking him off and putting him back on to monitor the aggression issues we felt were being caused by Flovent. On the medicine for about a week he becomes the devil! He has unbelievable tantrums. His aggression towards himself and other members of the family are truly scary. He hits himself, kicks, screams and becomes unruly and irrational over minor issues (like not wanting to wear a certain pair of shoes or socks, etc.) His fierce tantrums can last an hour or longer. They are severe and he's excruciatingly persistent on winning. His sleeping patterns are also affected. Bedtime is a nightly battle often not falling asleep until 10/11pm. He wakes at all hours of the night and is ready to rise when it is still dark outside. After several trials, he returns to norm

Additional Thoughts
Flovent is in the trash! My daughter takes Q-var with no known side effects to us so we will ask to be switched to this. We have given Flovent several tries and are now convinced that this medicine is NOT for our son. We are all miserable when he's on this.

Side Effects
chest pains, neuropathic pains (hands/feet), dizziness, sudden weight loss (131 pounds to 105 in 10 weeks), shaking, anxiety (during withdrawal), sore throat, dry mouth, red/burning quality to skin, difficulty swallowing

Additional Thoughts
I took 5 puffs daily of this medication in a 110 dose. Although it suppressed my coughing, it created so many other health troubles, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I reported my side effects to the manufacturer who said they would forward the info to the FDA. Steroids may benefit some people, but this one ruined my health. Since discontinuing it, some of my symptoms have resolved, and I'm hoping the others will go in time.

Additional Thoughts
It is such a relief to read other parents are having behavioral issues with children on Flovent! My son is so angry and emotional on this medicine and the Doc says, "oh, he's just a boy". I am printing this site out and taking it to the allergist asap and demanding a different solution. And to think I've been researching child psychologists to take him to!!!

Side Effects
Aggression, oversensitivity, anger that lasted hours and hours. We also had to be very careful about washing all the meds from her mouth and face as it caused her skin to be very dry.

Additional Thoughts
Our daughter's asthma seems to come on when she has a cold. We are trying chiropractic to see if her airways can be naturally opened up. We have decreased her flovent by half. She hasn't gotten a cold yet, so we haven't been put to the test, but she is a much nicer, easier, happier person already.

Side Effects
Puffy face, increased sleepiness. Painful lump in left breast. After mammo and 3 dr. opinions, decided it was stress and/or glands collecting something possibly related to steroid.

Additional Thoughts
Flovent, when taken regularly almost totally knocks out my need for ventolin. However, I'm looking for an alternative to see if the puffy steroid look goes away. I was told by my initial dr. who put me on Flovent years ago that the systemic affect was just about zero, since it really only goes to your lungs. I don't buy that anymore.
