Treats stomach ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and conditions that cause the stomach to produce too much stomach acid. Also treats or prevents heartburn caused by acid indigestion. This medicine is given to people who cannot take famotidine by mouth.

Uses
Treats stomach ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and conditions that cause the stomach to produce too much stomach acid. Also treats or prevents heartburn caused by acid indigestion. This medicine is given to people who cannot take famotidine by mouth.



How To Use
  • APPEARANCE: Injectable. Your doctor will prescribe your exact dose and tell you how often it should be given.
  • This medicine is given through a needle placed in one of your veins. A nurse or other trained health professional will give you this medicine. This IV form of famotidine is not for long-term use.
  • Your doctor might have you switch to famotidine that you take by mouth (Pepcid®) as soon as you are able.

Side Effects
  • Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects: Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing. Fast, slow, or uneven heartbeat. Skin or eyes turn yellow.

Precautions
  • You should not use this medicine if you have ever had an allergic reaction to famotidine or to similar medicines such as ranitidine (Zantac®), cimetidine (Tagamet®), or nizatidine (Axid®).


Drug Interactions
  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or breast feeding, or if you have kidney disease.
