Uses
Folic acid is used to treat or prevent certain anemias caused by poor diet, pregnancy or other conditions.
Notes
  • Folic acid is found naturally in leafy green or yellow vegetables.
  • Eat more of these foods to increase the amount of folic acid in your diet.
  • Do not allow anyone else to take this medication.

Storage
  • Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C) away from moisture and sunlight.
  • Do not store in the bathroom.


How To Use
  • Take this medication as directed.
  • Follow dietary recommendations made by your doctor or nutritionist.

Side Effects
  • Folic acid usually has very few side effects.
  • If you experience any unusual effects from taking this medicine, notify your doctor.
  • In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention.
  • Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness or trouble breathing.
  • If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions
  • Tell your doctor your medical history, especially if you have anemia (e.g., pernicious anemia) or any drug or food allergies.
  • This drug has proven safe for use during pregnancy when taken as directed.
  • Folic acid is excreted into breast milk and has not been reported to cause harm to nursing infants.
  • Consult your doctor about breast-feeding and using folic acid.

Missed Dose
  • If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
  • Do not double the dose to catch up.

Drug Interactions
  • Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medications you may use, especially phenytoin and vitamin preparations.
  • Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
