This medication is used to treat migraine headache attacks. It is not used to prevent migraines from occurring. Dihydroergotamine belongs to a class of drugs known as ergot alkaloids. It works by narrowing the blood vessels in the brain to relieve the headache.

Dihydroergotamine Nasl

Uses
This medication is used to treat migraine headache attacks. It is not used to prevent migraines from occurring. Dihydroergotamine belongs to a class of drugs known as ergot alkaloids. It works by narrowing the blood vessels in the brain to relieve the headache.
Notes
  • Do not share this medication with others.Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.g., EKG) may need to be performed periodically to monitor your progress or check for side effects.
  • Consult your doctor for more details.

Storage
  • Store below 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) away from heat, light, and moisture.
  • Do not freeze or refrigerate.
  • Do not store in the bathroom.
  • Discard opened nasal spray vials 8 hours after opening.
  • Keep all medicines away from children and pets.

Overdose
  • Symptoms of overdose may include: severe/sudden numbness, tingling, blue or purple hands/feet, slow/difficult breathing, confusion, seizures.

How To Use
  • Learn all preparation and usage instructions in the product package.
  • If any of the information is unclear, consult your doctor or pharmacist.This medication comes in individual nasal spray vials.
  • Each vial contains enough medication to treat a single migraine attack.
  • Before using each nasal spray vial, prime the pump by spraying 4 times into the air, away from the face.At the first sign of a migraine, spray this medication into the nostrils.
  • It must not be injected.
  • Give 1 spray into each nostril.
  • Do not tilt your head back or sniff through your nose while spraying or immediately after.
  • Give another spray into each nostril 15 minutes after the first sprays, or use as directed by your doctor.
  • After using the medication, you should lie down and relax in a quiet, darkened room.This medication works best when used at the first sign of a migraine headache.
  • It is used to treat migraine attacks when they occur and is not recommended for prolonged daily use.Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while being treated with this medication unless your doctor instructs you otherwise.
  • Grapefruit can increase the amount of certain medications in your bloodstream.
  • Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details.Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens after 24 hours.

Side Effects
  • See also Warning section.Irritation of the nose/throat, stuffy nose, bloody nose, changes in taste, dizziness, nausea, or vomiting may occur.
  • If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.
  • Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but very serious side effects occur: chest/jaw/left arm pain, fast/slow/irregular heartbeat, severe headache, weakness on one side of the body, slurred speech, vision changes, confusion, muscle pain, numbness, feeling of coldness in the hands/feet, blue fingers/toes, stomach/abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, black stools.A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare.
  • However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions
  • Before using dihydroergotamine, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to other ergot alkaloids (e.g., ergotamine, methysergide, bromocriptine) or if you have any other allergies.This medication should not be used if you have certain medical conditions.
  • Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have: heart disease (e.g., angina, history of a heart attack, silent ischemia, Prinzmetals variant angina), uncontrolled high blood pressure, blood circulation disease (e.g., peripheral arterial disease, Raynaud's syndrome), a certain severe blood infection (sepsis), bowel disease (e.g., ischemic bowel syndrome), severe kidney disease, severe liver disease, certain types of migraine headaches (e.g., hemiplegic or basilar), recent vascular surgery.Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially: high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, smoking, family history of heart disease.This drug may make you dizzy.
  • Use caution while driving, using machinery, or doing any activity that requires alertness.
  • Limit alcoholic beverages.Smoking cigarettes while using this medication can increase the risk of serious side effects such as heart problems (e.g., chest pain, fast/slow/irregular heartbeat) and decreased blood supply to the brain/hands/feet.
  • Stop smoking.
  • (See also Drug Interactions section.)This medication must not be used during pregnancy.
  • It may harm an unborn baby.
  • If you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant, tell your doctor immediately.It is likely that this drug passes into breast milk.
  • Breast-feeding while using this medication is not recommended.
  • Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.


Drug Interactions
  • See also Warning section.Your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for them.
  • Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with your doctor or pharmacist first.This drug should not be used with the following medications because very serious interactions may occur: azole antifungals (e.g., ketoconazole, itraconazole, posaconazole), macrolide antibiotics (e.g., clarithromycin, erythromycin, troleandomycin, telithromycin), protease inhibitors (e.g., ritonavir, nelfinavir, indinavir, amprenavir), non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (e.g., delavirdine, efavirenz).If you are currently using any of these medications listed above, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting dihydroergotamine.Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: vasoconstrictors (e.g., epinephrine, dopamine), beta blockers (e.g., propranolol), nicotine (e.g., cigarettes, nicotine gum/patches), a certain type of antidepressant (SSRIs such as fluoxetine, paroxetine, sertraline).If you are currently using a 5-HT1 agonist (e.g., sumatriptan, methysergide), avoid taking it for 24 hours before and after taking dihydroergotamine.
  • Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details and for advice on how to time your doses of these medications.
