Dextrose 10% in Water (D10W) Uses This medication is a solution given by vein (through an IV). It is used to supply water and calories to the body. It is also used as a mixing solution (diluent) for other IV medications. Dextrose is a natural sugar found in the body and serves as a major energy source. When used as an energy source, dextrose allows the body to preserve its muscle mass. Notes Do not share this medication with others.Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.g., blood sugar levels, blood electrolytes) should be performed from time to time to monitor your progress or check for side effects. Overdose Symptoms of overdose may include trouble breathing or swelling. How To Use This medication is given by vein as directed by your doctor. Symptoms of high blood sugar include thirst, increased urination, confusion, drowsiness, flushing, rapid breathing, and fruity breath odor. If these symptoms occur, tell your doctor immediately.A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Precautions Before taking dextrose, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any allergies.Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: diabetes, heart problems (e.g., congestive heart failure), kidney problems, fluid balance problems (e.g., hypovolemia), low levels of potassium (hypokalemia), vitamin B deficiencies, swelling (edema).This product contains aluminum, which may build up in your body if you use this product for a long time. This buildup may have harmful effects in certain patients (e.g., patients with kidney problems, including premature newborns). Consult your doctor for more details.Infants may be more sensitive to the effects of the drug.This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
