How To Use
- Inject this medication into a vein or under the skin as directed by your doctor, usually twice daily.Before injecting each dose, clean the injection site with rubbing alcohol.
- Before using, check this product visually for particles or discoloration.
- If either is present, do not use the liquid.
- Follow all instructions for proper mixing and dilution with the correct IV fluids, if necessary.
- If you have questions about using this medication properly, consult your pharmacist.Do not use it more frequently than prescribed without your doctor's approval.Limit drinking of water or other fluids while using this medication.
- Consult your doctor for details.Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it.
- To help you remember, use it at the same time(s) each day.Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.
- After taking desmopressin for 6 months or more, some patients may notice that the medicine does not work as well or last as long.
- Consult your doctor if this medication stops working well.Learn how to store and discard needles and medical supplies safely.
Side Effects
- Headache, runny nose, nausea, stomach ache, or flushing of the face may occur.
- If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.
- Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: stomach cramps, sudden weight gain, genital pain.Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: seizures, loss of consciousness, chest pain, weakness on one side of the body, slurred speech, vision changes, confusion.A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare.
- However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions
- Before taking desmopressin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies.This medication should not be used if you have certain medical conditions.
- Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have: kidney disease.Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: high blood pressure, breathing problems, heart disease, mineral imbalances (low potassium or sodium blood levels), cystic fibrosis, type 2 or 3 von Willebrand disease.Kidney function declines with age.
- This medication is removed by the kidneys.
- Therefore, caution is advised when using this drug in the elderly.Tell your doctor if you are pregnant before using this drug.It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk.
- Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Missed Dose
- If you miss a dose and use 1 dose daily, use it as soon as you remember, unless you do not remember until the next day.
- In that case, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
- Do not double the dose to catch up.If you use more than 1 dose daily, use it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for the next dose.

Drug Interactions
- Your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for them.
- Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with your doctor or pharmacist first.Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: carbamazepine, chlorpropamide, clofibrate, demeclocycline, drugs that increase blood pressure (e.g.
- dopamine, epinephrine, ephedrine, norepinephrine), fludrocortisone, heparin, lithium, urea, water pills (diuretics such as furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide), alcohol use.Ask your doctor how much alcohol you may drink, if any.
- Alcohol interferes with desmopressin by increasing urination.
