Uses
Vitamin A helps to keep eyesight and skin healthy and helps children to grow. Most people who have a normal diet do not need extra vitamin A. However, this vitamin is used to treat or prevent a lack of vitamin A and the problems that occur because of this lack (e.g., night blindness). Low vitamin A may occur with food absorption problems, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, liver disease, or cystic fibrosis with liver complications. Higher amounts of vitamin A may be required during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Do not share this vitamin with others.Many people do not need vitamin A supplements if they eat a normal diet containing green and yellow vegetables or fruits.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
Do not store in the bathroom.
Keep all medicines away from children and pets.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose may include: tiredness, irritability, mental/mood changes (e.g., depression, strange thoughts/behavior), loss of appetite, weight loss, abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, mild fever, unusual sweating, slowed growth in children, vision problems, skin/lip changes (e.g., cracking, peeling, itching, bruising), hair loss.

How To Use

Take this vitamin by mouth, usually once daily or exactly as directed by your doctor.Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.Use this vitamin regularly to get the most benefit from it.
To help you remember, take it at the same time each day.
Do not take more of this vitamin than prescribed because too much of it can cause serious side effects (e.g., liver damage).Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.

Side Effects

Vitamin A does not usually cause side effects when used in recommended doses.However, vitamin A may cause side effects if taken in doses that are larger than recommended.
Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: signs of liver problems (e.g., persistent nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, yellowing skin/eyes).A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare.
However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions

Before taking vitamin A, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies.Before using this vitamin, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: liver problems, problems with absorbing dietary fat, kidney problems.During pregnancy, this vitamin has been found to be safe only when used in recommended doses.
It must not be used in doses that are higher than recommended because doing so may harm an unborn baby.
Use products that contain vitamin A (e.g., prenatal vitamins) only if prescribed to you by your doctor.
While pregnant, do not use any other products containing vitamin A, including those applied to the skin.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember.
If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
Do not double the dose to catch up.

Drug Interactions

Your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for them.
Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with your doctor or pharmacist first.This drug should not be used with the following medications because very serious interactions may occur: isotretinoin, tretinoin, acitretin.If you are currently using any of these medications listed above, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting vitamin A.Before using this vitamin, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: orlistat, bexarotene, warfarin.Avoid taking products that contain vitamin A at the same time you take cholestyramine and mineral oil.
If you take either of these medications, separate your doses from your dose of vitamin A by at least 2 hours.Tell your doctor or pharmacist of other vitamins you may be taking that contain vitamin A.
