Azithromycin Zithromax Uses Treats infections caused by bacteria. This medicine is a macrolide antibiotic. Storage If you store this medicine at home, keep it at room temperature, away from heat and direct light. Medicine that has been mixed can be kept at room temperature for up to 24 hours. You may also store mixed medicine in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. Do not freeze. Do not use any mixed medicine that has been at room temperature for longer than 24 hours. Throw away any mixed medicine that has been kept in the refrigerator for longer than 7 days. Throw away used needles in a hard, closed container that the needles cannot poke through. Keep this container away from children and pets. Ask your pharmacist, doctor, or health caregiver about the best way to dispose of any leftover medicine, containers, and other supplies. You will also need to throw away old medicine after the expiration date has passed. Keep all medicine away from children and never share your medicine with anyone. How To Use APPEARANCE: Injectable. Your doctor will prescribe your exact dose and tell you how often it should be given. This medicine is given through a needle placed in one of your veins. This medicine is usually given by injection for two days, and then orally (by mouth) for 7 to 10 days. A nurse or other trained health professional will give you this medicine. You may be taught how to give your medicine at home. Make sure you understand all instructions before giving yourself an injection. Do not use more medicine or use it more often than your doctor tells you to. Use a new needle and syringe each time you inject your medicine. Keep using this medicine for the full treatment time, even if you feel better after the first few doses. Your infection may not clear up if you stop using the medicine too soon. Side Effects Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects: Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing. Blistering, peeling, red skin rash. Dark-colored urine or pale stools. Fast, slow, or uneven heartbeats. Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, pain in your upper stomach. Severe diarrhea (watery or bloody). Yellow skin or eyes. Precautions You should not use this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any other macrolide antibiotic. Missed Dose This medicine needs to be given on a fixed schedule. If you miss a dose or forget to use your medicine, call your doctor or pharmacist for instructions. Drug Interactions Make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or breast feeding, or if you have kidney disease, liver disease, heart rhythm problems, or problems with your immune system. If you have severe diarrhea, ask your doctor before taking any medicine to stop the diarrhea. This medicine may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Use a sunscreen when you are outdoors. Avoid sunlamps and tanning beds.
