Aprepitant Uses Aprepitant is used in combination with other drugs to help prevent nausea and vomiting due to cancer drug treatment (chemotherapy). This medication may also be used to prevent nausea and vomiting after surgery. Aprepitant works by blocking one of the body's chemicals (substance P/neurokinin 1) that causes vomiting. Notes Do not share this medication with others.Laboratory tests (e.g., liver function tests) may be performed periodically to monitor for side effects. Consult your doctor for more details. Storage Store at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medicines away from children and pets. How To Use Read the Patient Information Leaflet available from your pharmacist before you start taking this medication and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, consult your doctor or pharmacist.Take this medication by mouth, with or without food. For preventing nausea and vomiting caused by cancer drug treatment, the first dose is usually taken 1 hour before treatment. On the following days, the dose is taken usually once daily in the morning; or use as directed by your doctor. If you are taking this medication to prevent nausea and vomiting after surgery, usually one dose of 40 milligrams is taken before surgery.Dosage is based on your medical condition (cancer chemotherapy or post-surgery uses) and response to therapy. It is important to follow your doctor's instructions for the timing of each dose, strength (number of milligrams) of each dose and for the length of treatment. If you have any questions, consult your doctor or pharmacist.Do not take this medication if you are already experiencing nausea and vomiting. Contact your doctor for further instructions. Side Effects Tiredness, weakness, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, loss of appetite, upset stomach, dizziness, headache and hiccups may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.An allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Precautions Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: severe liver problems, any allergies.This drug may make you dizzy; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages.This medication may decrease the effectiveness of combination-type birth control pills. You may need to use an additional form of reliable birth control while using this medication. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for details.This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk. Due to the potential risk to the infant, breast-feeding is not recommended while using this drug. Missed Dose It is important that each dose is taken according to the prescribed schedule. If you miss a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately to establish a new dosing schedule. Drug Interactions Your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for it. Do not start, stop or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first.This drug should not be used with the following medications because very serious, potentially life-threatening, interactions may occur: cisapride, pimozide.If you are currently using any of these medications, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting aprepitant.Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription products you may use, especially of: azole antifungals (e.g., itraconazole, ketoconazole), benzodiazepines (e.g., alprazolam, midazolam, triazolam), carbamazepine, cancer chemotherapy agents removed by certain liver enzymes (CYP 3A4 substrates such as ifosfamide, vinblastine, vincristine), cimetidine, corticosteroids (e.g., dexamethasone, methylprednisolone), diltiazem, HIV protease inhibitors (e.g., nelfinavir, ritonavir), macrolide antibiotics (e.g., clarithromycin, erythromycin), nefazodone, phenytoin, rifamycins (e.g., rifampin), St. John's wort, warfarin.This medication may decrease the effectiveness of combination-type birth control pills. This can result in pregnancy. You may need to use an additional form of reliable birth control while using this medication. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for details.
