Anti-Thymocyte Glob (Rabbit) Uses This medication is used to treat rejection after organ transplant (e.g., kidney transplant).This medication may also be used for the treatment of certain blood disorders (aplastic anemia). Notes Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.g., blood tests ) should be performed to monitor your progress. Keep all doctor appointments and lab visits so your therapy can be monitored closely. Storage Store vials in a refrigerator between 36 and 46 degrees F (2 to 8 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Consult your pharmacist for details regarding the stability of the drug after dilution in IV fluids. Discard any unused liquid. How To Use Give this medication by vein (IV), as directed by your doctor.You might receive other medications (e.g., acetaminophen, corticosteroids, and/or an antihistamine) in order to decrease the side effects of this drug. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for details, including how and when to take additional medications.You might receive other medications to help prevent rejection of the transplant organ (e.g., corticosteroids, azathioprine) and/or prevent infection (e.g., antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals). Take these medications exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure how to take any of your medications.Follow all directions for proper mixing and dilution with correct IV fluids. Follow all safety precautions for this medication. Consult your pharmacist for details.Before using, check this medication visually for particles or discoloration. If either is present, do not use the liquid. Side Effects Nausea, chills or headache may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly.Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: fever, dizziness, diarrhea, stomach pain, unusual fatigue, joint or muscle pain, persistent sore throat, easy bleeding or bruising, fast or irregular pulse.An allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Precautions Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies.This medication is not recommended for use if you have the following medical conditions: current viral illness, allergy to rabbit proteins.Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: blood cell problems (e.g., leukopenia, thrombocytopenia), previous use of anti-thymocyte globulin.This medication may make you dizzy. Use caution when engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages because they can increase the dizziness effect of this medication.Notify your doctor promptly if you develop any signs of an infection, such as fever, chills or persistent sore throat.This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. Missed Dose It is important to receive this drug exactly as prescribed. However, if you miss a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately to establish a new dosing schedule. If the dose is interrupted, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately to establish new dosing. Drug Interactions Your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for them. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first.Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially: corticosteroid drugs (e.g., methylprednisolone, prednisone), other drugs that suppress the immune system (e.g., azathioprine, cyclosporine), rabbit-derived products (immune globulins).This medication can affect the results of certain lab tests. Make sure laboratory personnel and your doctors know you use this drug.
