Uses
This medication is used to treat a severe fungal infection.
Notes
- This medication is usually administered initially in the hospital where your condition can be monitored closely.
- Laboratory tests will be done periodically to be sure the drug is working properly and to monitor for possible side effects.
Storage
- Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from heat, moisture and light.
- Do not store in the bathroom.

How To Use
- This medication is taken by mouth usually at 6 hour intervals.
- To reduce stomach upset, it is best to swallow the capsules for each dose over a period of fifteen minutes.
- Do not swallow all the capsules for one dose at the same time.
- Continue using this medication for the full time prescribed.
- Stopping therapy too soon may result in ineffective treatment.
Side Effects
- This medication may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, itching, dry mouth, weakness, fatigue.
- If these symptoms continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor.
- Notify your doctor if you develop a skin rash, jaundice, chest pain, breathing trouble, dizziness, mental confusion, hearing loss, tingling of the hands or feet or experience uncontrollable movements while taking this medication.
- This medication can affect your kidney, liver and blood.
- Tests will be done to monitor for this.
- Your therapy will be adjusted accordingly.
- If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions
- Tell your doctor if you have any pre-existing liver disease, kidney disease, bone marrow disorders or any allergies.
- This medication should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy.
- Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
- It is not known if this medication appears in breast milk.
- Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Missed Dose
- It is important to take each dose at the scheduled time.
- If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered; do not take it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
- Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.
Drug Interactions
- Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take especially amphotericin B, or cytosine.
- Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
