Adalimumab Humira Uses Treats symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and slows the joint damage caused by RA. This medicine also treats psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. Storage If you store this medicine at home, keep it in the refrigerator. Do not freeze. Protect the medicine from light. Keep your medicine and supplies in the original packages until you are ready to use them. Throw away used needles in a hard, closed container that the needles cannot poke through. Keep this container away from children and pets. Ask your pharmacist, doctor, or health caregiver about the best way to dispose of any leftover medicine, containers, and other supplies. You will also need to throw away old medicine after the expiration date has passed. Keep all medicine away from children and never share your medicine with anyone. How To Use APPEARANCE: Injectable. Your doctor will prescribe your exact dose and tell you how often it should be given. This medicine is given as a shot under your skin. A nurse or other trained health professional will give you this medicine. You may be taught how to give your medicine at home. Make sure you understand all instructions before giving yourself an injection. Do not use more medicine or use it more often than your doctor tells you to. Use a new needle and syringe each time you inject your medicine. You will be shown the body areas where this shot can be given. Use a different body area each time you give yourself a shot. Keep track of where you give each shot to make sure you rotate body areas. Side Effects Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects: Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing. Chest pain, fast or uneven heartbeat. Cold or flu symptoms such as runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, body aches. Dry mouth, increased thirst, muscle cramps. Fever, chills, cough that does not go away, unexplained weight loss. Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, pain in your upper stomach. Numbness, tingling, or burning pain in your hands, arms, legs, or feet. Pain in your lower leg (calf). Pain with urination, change in how much or how often you urinate. Red, black or tarry stools, or dark urine. Shortness of breath, cold sweat, and bluish-colored skin. Swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet. Unusual bleeding, bruising, weakness, or pale skin. Yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes. Precautions You should not use this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to adalimumab. Missed Dose If you miss a dose or forget to use your medicine, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to use the medicine and skip the missed dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up for a missed dose. Drug Interactions Make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have congestive heart failure, or if you have a history of hepatitis B infection. Tell your doctor if you have tuberculosis, problems with your immune system, or multiple sclerosis or a similar nervous system disease. Also tell your doctor if you are scheduled for any surgery. You will need to have a skin test for tuberculosis before you start using this medicine. Tell your doctor if you or anyone in your home has ever had a positive reaction to a tuberculosis test. You may get infections more easily while you are using this medicine. Avoid being near people who are sick or have infections. Wash your hands often. Tell your doctor if you have any kind of infection before you start using this medicine. Also tell your doctor if you have ever had an infection that would not go away or an infection that kept coming back. Call your doctor right away if you start to have persistent cough, weight loss, night sweats, fever, chills, or flu-like symptoms such as runny or stuffy nose, headache, or feeling generally ill. This may be signs that you are already having an infection. Some people who have used this medicine developed lupus-like symptoms during treatment and got better after this medicine was stopped. Make sure your doctor knows if you start having chest pains, shortness of breath, joint pain, or a rash on your cheeks or arms that is sensitive to the sun. A small number of people who have used this medicine have developed a type of cancer called "lymphoma." This is very rare. Talk with your doctor if you are concerned.
