Abarelix IM Uses Abarelix is used to treat men with advanced prostate cancer when other types of treatment are not acceptable. It works by lowering the amount of testosterone hormone that your body makes. Prostate cancer relies on testosterone to grow, so this medication works by slowing tumor growth.This medication should not be used in women or children. Notes Do not share this medication with others.Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.g., testosterone levels, liver tests, prostate specific antigen - PSA levels) should be performed periodically to monitor your progress or check for side effects. Consult your doctor for more details. Storage Store at room temperature (77 degrees F or 25 degrees C). Brief storage between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) is permitted. Once mixed in solution, abarelix should be used within 1 hour. How To Use Read the Patient Information Leaflet and read and sign the Informed Consent provided by your doctor before you start treatment with abarelix. If you have any questions regarding the information, consult your doctor or pharmacist.This medication is given by injection into your buttock muscle (intramuscularly-IM) by a healthcare professional. It should be mixed in the proper solution provided in the package. Abarelix is usually given every 2 weeks for the first 3 doses, then once every 4 weeks thereafter, or as directed by your doctor. Side Effects Flushing, sweating, headache, dizziness, trouble sleeping, tiredness, breast pain/tenderness/enlargement, constipation, or upset stomach may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: swelling of the ankles/feet, new or worsening bone pain, bone fracture, yellowing eyes or skin, dark urine, stomach/abdominal pain.Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: fast or irregular heartbeat.A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, fainting, trouble breathing.If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Precautions Before taking abarelix, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies.Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: a certain heart rhythm problem (QTc prolongation), liver disease.This drug may make you dizzy; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Alcohol may worsen this effect. Limit alcoholic beverages.Use a reliable form of birth control (proven barrier method such as latex condoms) during treatment with this medication.This drug should not be used in women and must not be used during pregnancy due to the risk of harm to an unborn baby. It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk. Missed Dose For optimal benefits, it is important to receive each scheduled dose of this medication as directed. If you miss a dose, contact your doctor to establish a new dosing schedule. Drug Interactions Your healthcare professionals (e.g., doctor or pharmacist) may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for it. Do not start, stop or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first.Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use.Other drugs besides abarelix which may affect the heart rhythm (QTc prolongation in the EKG) include dofetilide, pimozide, procainamide, amiodarone, quinidine, sotalol, and erythromycin among others. QTc prolongation can infrequently result in serious, rarely fatal, irregular heartbeats. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details, and for instructions on how you may minimize the risk of this side effect.
